The 6-Point Verification Checklist
1. Check the KEBS Holographic Sticker
Every legally imported or locally produced spirit in Kenya must carry a Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) holographic sticker. This sticker:
- Is a metallic hologram — it changes colour when tilted
- Cannot be photocopied or laser-printed convincingly
- Is placed on the bottle neck or label area depending on the product
Red flag: A flat, non-holographic sticker or no sticker at all. Report to KEBS immediately.
2. Inspect the Bottle Closure
Premium spirits use tamper-evident closures. When you open a genuine bottle for the first time:
- The neck seal should break — creating an audible "click" or visible tear
- The cap should have a security mechanism that prevents re-sealing
- Johnnie Walker uses a signature pour-preventing cap — if it pours freely when new, something is wrong
3. Check the Liquid Colour and Clarity
- Whisky should be consistently amber/golden — slight variation is fine, but it should not be muddy or cloudy
- Vodka should be crystal clear with zero cloudiness
- Gin should be clear — unless it's a coloured craft gin
4. The Smell Test
Counterfeit spirits often contain methanol or industrial alcohol:
- Genuine whisky: warm, complex, slightly sweet with oak notes
- Counterfeit warning: chemical, nail polish remover, or petrol-like smell
- If it smells wrong — do not drink it. The risk of methanol poisoning is real and can cause blindness or death
5. The Burn Test
Pour a small amount onto a metal spoon and ignite it:
- Genuine spirits (40%+ ABV): Burns blue with a clean flame
- Counterfeit/diluted: Burns yellow, red, or produces black soot
- Below 40% ABV: May not ignite at all — possible sign of dilution
